It was a quiet first half of 2015 for the quickly rising pop group A Great Big World composed of Ian Axel and Chad King but the second half started to get quite busy once they released the leading single “Hold Each Other” off their sophomore album When The Morning Comes which is out now. I’m going to discuss their year in this post.
To start off, like mentioned earlier the first half of 2015 was very quiet for the group as far as touring shows went. Axel and King did attend the 57th Grammy Awards on Feb. 8, 2015 and won in the Best Pop Duo/Group performance category for “Say Something” featuring Christina Aguilera. It was an extremely happy and emotional time being that they were in the same category as Katy Perry, Coldplay, and Nicki Minaj. To even think they would even win blew my mind and their’s. I couldn’t think of anyone more deserving than them.
The week after the Grammy Awards, they played Train’s Sail Across the Sun Cruise from Feb. 13-17 which left from Miami, FL and went to Key West and Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas. I was very fortunate to make it on this cruise and was one of the best experiences of my life. How many people can say they went on a cruise with their favorite band? You can read my whole experience here. If you ever get the chance to go on a music cruise like this one- take it! The musicians/bands really take the time to talk to you and to just get that up close and personal experience totally isn’t something you get every day. Check out my video playlist from Sail Across the Sun right here.
After that was when Axel and King went into quiet mode to work on their second album. It was a silent time for the fans with no new music from them but when July hit that’s when the duo dropped their new single “Hold Each Other” on July 22 featuring Arizona based rapper Futuristic. It was a completely different sound for the group but they made it work completely. It’s a universal love song and originally it was going to be talking about a guy loving a girl for the entire song but Axel soon realized King couldn’t do that. Chad was suppressing his real feelings- they went back and re-wrote the song by changing King’s verses to ‘him’ instead of ‘her’ which made it the first pop song that talks about a situation like this. This makes me even more proud to be a fan of their’s. To even have the courage to do this.
They soon made a couple TV appearances to promote the single with their first performance of it being on the VH1 Streamy Awards and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon just to name two of the appearance. Check out their performance of “Hold Each Other” from the Streamy Awards below.
October hit and that’s when Ian and Chad announced the album track-list and name. It was originally titled Won’t Stop Running but then it was changed to When The Morning Comes to fit the theme of the album better. The group dropped the first five tracks off the album to get ‘rockstars’ pumped for the release on Nov. 13.
These tracks totally proved despite the sound change they still had the same heart and soul as their first album Is There Anybody Out There. Fast forward a month, album release day was finally here! Fans rejoiced and excitement was in the air! All these months of waiting and finally new music from the group! It was quite a busy day for them as they performed on NBC’s The Today Show, made rounds to the Facebook HQ and did a special Q&A and performance at the Apple Store in SoHo. The album made its way to the Top 10 on the USA iTunes Pop Charts the day of release.
The group played an album release show in New York City at The Gramercy Theatre on Nov. 18, a week after the album’s release. The group then started a small radio tour around the U.S. playing shows in Texas, Denver, Virginia, Alabama, Modesto, CA, San Jose, CA, Napa Valley, New York City, Minneapolis, Huntington, NY, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, PA, and Nashville TN.
I decided to make my way to Nashville to see the guys play their last show of the year on Dec. 19 at 107.5 The River’s Ugly Christmas Sweater Party. It was such an incredible night and great hangs with Ian and Chad themselves. They played a lot of tracks off the new record as well as a couple of old ones from the first album. Every time I see them, it’s a totally different experience (in a good way of course). Check out my video playlist from the night here.
Overall, it was definitely an exciting year for the duo! A Grammy Award, a new single launch in July and the album release in November. There is so much in store for these very talented guys. I’m very fortunate and grateful to know such humble individuals. They have grown so much and it makes me extremely proud to see where they are in their careers at this point. Ian and Chad continue to inspire me and millions of others around the world every single day. They’re two guys with the goal of spreading nothing but love and positivity into the world and that’s what we need more of with all the craziness happening everywhere. The sky is the limit for these two. Be sure to pick up their new album When The Morning Comes out everywhere now. Their new single “Oasis” off the album is launching soon! Look for the guys on tour beginning in March 2016! You don’t want to miss out on their show.
