DIM MAK Records artist Bright Lights released her debut single “Runaway” last November. While working in the studio on her second single, the EDM star focused her creative energy on a must-hear cover of Kanye West’s “Heartless.” Fans and music lovers can catch the equally brilliant video for “Heartless” right here as an exclusive POPULOVE premiere!
Bright Lights may be a newcomer as a recording artist, but the 33-year-old has been in the pop scene for nearly a decade writing for well-known artists and featuring on tracks like Zedd’s “Follow You Down.” She’s written for Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, Usher, The Wanted, Fantasia, Far East Movement and more. With a background like that, there’s no question that Bright Lights should be in the foreground of music.
“I wanted to create a remix series and pay tribute to some of the songs and artists who have influenced me over the years,” Bright Lights told POPULOVE about the cover.
“This video is my tribute to fashion,” she said. “I love designing looks and making people feel something visually.”
In an age where mainstream music is designed to be as easily consumed as possible, listening to Bright Lights is refreshing, to say the least. Tracks like “Runaway” and “Heartless” combine influences from house, trap, and other EDM subgenres for electrifying productions laced with emotion. Her sound is perfect for radio but complex enough to separate Bright Lights from other pop newcomers. (Leave a comment if you agree!)
“I worked to combine her familiar yet unique lyricism with a contemporary production twist,” producer 3LAU (Justin David Blau) told Ryan Seacrest.com about his work on “Runaway.” “We did our best to balance clubby energy with emotional musicality.”
“Runaway” is the fourth collaboration between Bright Lights and 3LAU. A past collaboration titled “How You Love Me” is on the cusp of 5.5 million views on YouTube (so you probably want to click here to listen).
Aside from the music, it’s also hard not to fall in love with the personality of Heather Bright, the not-so-secret true identity of Bright Lights. Heather has been active on YouTube for over six years and uses the platform to share behind-the-scenes clips from live shows and connect with fans on issues of real life.
In a video uploaded after the premiere of “Runaway,” Heather shares how her father helped her make the decision to pursue a life in music.
“He sat me down and said ‘Heather, I need to know if this music thing is in your head or if it’s in your heart,'” she tells fans. “‘If this is your real passion, you will go through hard times, and you’re going to come out the other side still doing the same thing because that’s what you love.'”
“It’s one of the things that let me know I was on the right path,” she said.

To Heather: you are definitely on the right path, and we can’t wait to share that path with more music lovers later this year with the launch of the Bright Lights album and tour.
