Carly Rae Jepsen talks career beginnings in new interview

You’ve probably all heard of Carly Rae Jepsen by now, but how did she get her start in music? Carly talked to Ireland’s UTV about her beginnings as a performer.

The start to the 29-year-old’s music career “was a beautiful fire” according to her interview with UTV.

“I think my parents noticed that I was singing non-stop when I was about seven-years-old. They asked me if I would like to be a part of the local talent show in Mission, British Columbia, where I’m from,” she said.

“I jumped at the opportunity and I can remember not feeling scared at all, it was a really strange realization. I got a rush from performing and I knew in that moment that I wanted to spend my life trying to do that.”

In 2007 she took her talents to season five of Canadian Idol in 2007 where she placed third. Jepsen admits she is thankful for getting cut when she did. To Carly, the first-place “prize” wasn’t much of a prize at all.

” I think that when we were in the top five they presented us all with contracts to be like ‘alright if you win, this is what you have to sign.’ I looked it over and I definitely couldn’t see the prize in it,” she admits.

“It sort of felt like you were locked to this contract with not a lot of rights. However, I’m a competitive lass and I felt like winning would still be fun for the kick of it, so I tried very hard.

“But I think in hindsight, third was probably way better – I got all the exposure and I got the freedom to do what I wanted afterwards.”

After the young songstress released her first pop record “Call Me Maybe,” he career took off with a little help from Justin Bieber.

“It started to get played in Canada and when Justin Bieber came home for Christmas I guess he heard it and tweeted about it. That just started a beautiful fire.”

And what a beautiful fire it was!

“We were off to the races then and we started getting all these phone calls from different labels asking if we’d sign with them for a worldwide deal.”

She currently resides under the management of Scooter Braun at Schoolboy Records. Braun also represents Justin Bieber, Psy, and Ariana Grande.

Carly Rae Jepsen’s album Emotion is set to be released on June 24 through Schoolboy Records.
