Ed Sheeran is quitting social media and why it might not be a bad thing

Another day, another…celebrity taking a break? Ed Sheeran recently announced that along with taking a break, he’s quitting social media for most of next year. But why would he ever want to do such a thing? For starters, let’s look at what he actually had to say about leaving in his Instagram post:

“I’m taking a break from my phone, emails, and all social media for a while,” Ed says, “I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes.” He continues with saying that he’s going to spend his time traveling the world to see everything he’s missed. This may come as a shock to some, considering that artists like Ed travel the world and see more of it than most people do. While that may be true, it’s also true that artists don’t really get a lot of time to explore the places they visit while on tour. We’re glad Ed wants to do this. Who knows, maybe exploring the world without being glued to a phone will inspire some interesting new music from him.

Quitting social media may not just turn out to be a good thing for our favorite ginger singer, it could turn out to be a good thing for the rest of us too. We can learn a thing or two from his decision and we can start monitoring how much we mindlessly use the internet. We all know social media is great, but even too much of a good thing can become a bad thing. That’s why we’re proud of Ed for bringing this subject to light. It’s nice to take your eyes off the screen once in a while and really live in the moment.

He finished his message off with something for us to look forward to: “The 3rd album is on its way and is the best thing I have made thus far. See you all next autumn, and thank you for being amazing.”

Thank you, Ed, for the amazing art you have shared with us all. Thank you for perhaps unintentionally reminding us all to think about how we too can start seeing the world through our own eyes more. We still admit that we’ll miss your tweets and Instagram updates, though. Thanks for everything. We can’t wait for album #3. We know it’s going to be great.
