The chart-topping duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis just released a new track this week called “Growing Up (Slaone’s Song)!” The ode to Macklemore’s newborn is the first release from the Seattle star since 2012’s The Heist.
“Growing Up” is a smooth-flowing emotional ballad, much like the rapper’s successful “Same Love,” however Macklemore and Ryan Lewis brought in a new friend for this release… Ed Sheeran!
Sheeran’s voice is filled with emotion and honest when he sings the hook, ” I’ll be patient, one more month/ You’ll wrap your fingers round my thumb/ Times are changing, I know, but who am I if/ I’m the person you become.”
The “Thinking Out Loud” singer does for “Growing Up” what Mary Lambert did for “Same Love.” The chorus of each song is the perfect polish for Macklemore’s truthful lyrics and Lewis’ production.
“Growing Up” is as much of a message to Haggerty’s daughter, Sloane, about growing up as much as it is a message to himself about continuing to grow. In a lengthy message released with the song, Macklemore admits that the song was written with the fear of being a father.
“I’ve always had some make-believe image in my head of who I would be as a father. I held on to clear expectations of where I wanted be in my career, my age, my level of self-care, and my maturity. I basically assumed that I’d have it all together,” he writes.
“But in actuality the hypothetical ‘dad’ version of me looked completely different than the man whose heart was beating out of his chest on the carpet, praying to a god or spirit I hadn’t talked to in months. When Tricia walked out of the bathroom, I knew. And I knew I had to change.”
He continues, “Ryan had made a new beat that would eventually become the song you’re listening to. Half of it is advice about growing up. The other half is trying to figure out how to grow up myself.”
The message ends with the happiness his daughter brought him.
“And if you’re wondering…Our daughter, Sloane Ava Simone Haggerty was born 2 months ago on May 29th. There is nothing like the joy and happiness that comes from bringing a baby into this universe. She has filled my heart in ways.”
