How I lost 62 lbs. and took control of my life

Self-worth is one of the most important things in anyone’s life. Being comfortable in your own skin is a feeling that can only be appreciated by people who don’t have it.

Such was my life for 17 years of my life. All my life, I was the big kid; the kid who couldn’t run; the kid who did nothing but stay alone and eat in an attempt to fill the emptiness in his life.

In 2012, I was struck with Severe Acute Biliary Pancreatitis that turned into multi-organ failure and due to my obesity, recovery from surgeries and immune strength was abysmally low – I almost died.

Once I miraculously survived, I had to take lots of cortisol based medications that, in addition to my horrible eating habits, made me even heavier. At my heaviest (as per my 18th birthday), I was 5’11” and a massive 250lbs with little to no muscle mass. This was when I decided that I was worth way more than this; this is when my weight loss journey began.

In the beginning, I lots ridiculous amounts of weight simply by starting to eat healthy by tracking my calories on an app called myfitnesspal. I also started going to the gym from time to time (it was nothing to brag about. Just some cardio here and there). In only half a year, I had lost a massive 60lbs! I was still fat but I was in the best shape of my life – I was finally not obese!

I thought I had done it, and in no time I’d be where I wanted to be all my life and BOY I WAS WRONG!

I realised that my mistake was in the fact that I had done little to no weight training and my body had tiny amounts of muscle, resulting in a body composition that did not reflect my weight at all. I was still quite flabby and had lost a lot of weight due to the fact that I’d lost most of my muscle and on top of it all, all the muscle loss severely lowered my metabolism. Here’s the catch: I had no knowledge of any of this as this was happening. Thus, in only a few months, I had gained almost 20lbs. I was outraged! How could I have gained all this weight?!

From then on, I started researching on online forums instead of going on what I thought was right. The two forums/websites that are basically the reason why I am where I am today are bodybuilding.com and myfitnesspal.com. I recommend anyone who wishes to lose or gain weight to join these forums and use all of the amazing insight they give to the beginner and experienced athlete alike.

Only two months ago, in April, I was at 203lbs. While this was admittedly way lower than my previous 250+ lbs, I was still borderline obese with most of my excess weight being fat due to a severe lack of muscle mass.

This was when I put my foot down for the very last time and use all the knowledge I had gained about nutrition and exercise to make the final push. Not only that, I wanted to change my lifestyle altogether this time because I had realised by now that losing weight and/or gaining muscle is not something you’re supposed to have a deadline on. It is something that you must aim to have for life!

I started exercising daily, combining lots of heavy weight training and cardio into my workout. I used apps like Nike+, BodySpace, Fitocracy, myfitnesspal and runkeeper to keep track of my progress and quantify my workouts. In exactly two months, I have gone from 203lbs to 189lbs and have gained tons of muscle mass.

This whole process has made me realize that ANYONE can be comfortable in their own skin and be whoever they want to be.
