Melanie Martinez

Melanie Martinez personifies ‘Cry Baby’ like never before in her twisted new video

Melanie Martinez just took us even deeper into the messed up world of Cry Baby with her official “Cry Baby” music video. This time, we see the origin of the “Cry Baby” nickname and her not-so perfect family life.

In “Cry Baby,” Stella Rose Saint Clair reprises her role as Cry Baby’s mother and births little-miss-waterworks in most peculiar fashion. The video takes us back to the mother’s pregnancy and when CB was ready to be born, queue a rabbit-faced doctor to burst the belly open!

Scenes of Melanie’s alter ego refusing her baby food, pouting in her crib, and flooding her bed room with tears were all forecast in the hospital room as Stella slurred the words “Oh, she’s a cry baby,” to the nurse that registered Cry Baby on the birth certificate. Mommy and daughter seemed to have a rocky relationship from the start, and mommy’s drinking problems seems to pre-date Cry Baby’s birth date.

“Look at my mom, she’s got it going on. Ha! You’re blinded by her jewelry/ When you turn your back, she pulls out a flask and forgets his infidelity,” are the first lyrics (“Dollhouse“) to reference Mother’s alcohol addiction. In the “Sippy Cup” video, those lyrics are amplified in an even larger scale answering the age old question, “What goes down in the kitchen?”

All of the Cry Baby music videos continue the story of Cry Baby, a character created by Melanie Martinez and the star of her first full-length album. In a recent interview, Melanie detailed how she hopes to create an entire world around Cry Baby and tie the stories together in movie-like fashion.

“My whole goal for my music in general is to have every album create to make this bigger story,” Martinez told Fuse. “Cry Baby is just one character in this weird world I’m trying to create. I want them all to connect eventually, and Cry Baby is like a movie or a book. That’s how I want people to see my music.”

Cry Baby was the first of, hopefully, many stories from the dark and twisted mind of Melanie Martinez. With more and more videos being released from the album, Cry Baby is coming to life like never before! Catch up on Cry Baby’s noir world at Melanie’s YouTube channel and watch videos for “Training Wheels,” “Dollhouse,” and more!

Side Note: Can we take a minute to appreciate Melanie’s hair and makeup in the “Cry Baby” video?
