Writing can be a difficult process, and one way I break through my writer’s block is listening to music. I’m a visual writer, so when I picture a scene it’s like watching a movie in my head, including hearing the soundtrack. Listening to music while I write can give extra meaning or influence to a scene. I like to think about who each of my characters are and give them their own soundtrack for their journey through the story. For my debut novel Becoming Death, the tone varied from dark to determined as the main character Madison struggles with her role as a newly-called grim reaper. She goes from accepting her role to rebelling against it. The songs I picked for my list represent different scenes in the book.
1) Dog Days Are Over – Florence and the Machine
2) Bring Me to Life – Evanescence
3) Numb – Linkin Park
4) Counting Stars – One Republic
5) Falling Fast – Avril Lavigne
