In case you live under a rock, Sam Smith’s rising fame was validated at the Grammys last night — FOUR TIMES! The “Stay With Me” singer took home Grammy awards for song of year, record of the year, best new artist and best pop vocal album.
“Before I made this record I was doing everything to try and get my music heard. I tried to lose weight, and I was making awful music. It was only until I started to be myself that the music started to flow and people started to listen,” Smith said in one acceptance speech.
His debut album, In The Lonely Hour, was inspired by a long-time friend and crush, a straight guy who couldn’t reciprocate Smith’s feelings.
When asked backstage about the man who inspired “Stay With Me” and the album’s additional hits, Smith said “I’ll be seeing him soon, so I can let him touch the Grammy — once.”
One of Sam Smith’s admitted idols Lady Gaga tweeted her love for the singer after his final Grammy win.
“I’m so proud of my darling SAM SMITH for all his wins tonight!” Gaga said. “You deserve everything and more because you are YOU. I was honored to watch!”
Smith tweeted back, saying “thank you so much!! You being YOU inspired me to do the same. Love you forever gaga xxxxxxxxx”
The four-time Grammy winner says being himself is what makes In The Lonely Hour personally beautiful to him.
“What’s beautiful about this record to me is I didn’t play a character,” Smith told reporters backstage. “It was just me being me. I was living my life and just spoke about it through music, and I’m going to do the same again.”
Smith celebrated his wins with a night of partying and celebration, like any star, before posting on Instagram this morning “What actually happened last night? I am monumentally hungover and keep spontaneously crying lol.”
