With three critically acclaimed albums already under her belt in three years, is a new Lana Del Rey record coming sooner than we think?
It may only be nine months since the release of her last LP Ultraviolence, but it appears Lana Del Rey has been busy, and a new album is very much in the pipeline. The new record, rumored to be called Honeymoon and rumoured for a late summer release, was announced in an interview with Billboard Magazine earlier this year. In the interview, Del Rey said that she had already finished nine tracks which could possibly make the album, four of which “the production is perfect.”
“I have this one song, ‘Music to Watch Boys To.’ The title lends itself to a visual of shadows of men passing by, this girl’s eyes, her face,” Lana told the LA Times.
The fact Lana is already planning visuals can only be a sign that new music is on its way! So, what will the new music sound like? Lana’s music has evolved a lot since the release of her debut record Born to Die in 2012, and in the last few years she has made a significant mark on the film industry: writing and performing in Baz Luhrmann’s remake of The Great Gatsby, Disney’s Maleficent, and most recently Tim Burton’s Big Eyes. Perhaps Honeymoon will have that cinematic tone Lana has mastered. If her feature on Emile Haynie’s recent album We Fall is anything to go by, we can expect some beautiful songs from the “Brooklyn Baby.”
We’re guessing Honeymoon won’t be as rock-infused as Ultraviolence. When speaking to Billboard, Lana described the record as “very different from the last one and similar to the first two.”
“I finished my last one in March and released it in June and I had a follow-up idea. It’s growing into something I really like. I’m kind of enjoying sinking into this more nourish feel for this one. It’s been good,” Lana said.
Lana recently announced that following the positive reception to her cover of Nina Simone’s “The Other Woman” on Ultraviolence, she is covering Nina’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” on Honeymoon. As far as producers are concerned, Dan Heath and Rick Nowels were mentioned by Lana back in December.
“Dan Heath and Rick Nowels are two of my dearest friends and producers and we are always up to something,” she told Galore Magazine. And to the LA Times, she said Dan Heath “adds a lot of cinema to my sound.”
Could this mean that we can expect these two on Honeymoon, and is she hinting that the album will sound cinematic? I certainly hope so! It’s also been reported that producer Mark Ronson, who has previously worked with artists like Adele and Amy Winehouse, has listened to Lana’s new music and is getting ready to go into the studio with her.
While talking with Interview magazine, Ronson said, “(Lana) has some songs, and I said I had some demo ideas, and if they are any good, then maybe she’ll like them, and we’ll go from there.”
It doesn’t sound as if anything is set in stone just yet, but Mark Ronson is definitely one to look out for on Honeymoon.
Lana released Ultraviolence’s lead single, “West Coast,” two months before the album dropped. With Honeymoon rumored to be released in the summer of this year, we could expect a new track within the next few months! We will certainly keep you up to date on all things Lana Del Rey and hope you are as excited as we are to hear the new music.
