Zayn Malik caused a Twitter frenzy on Thursday night when he changed his Twitter handle and bio, leaving no trace of his former boy band One Direction.
Zayn decided to leave One Direction in March, but until that dreadful Thursday night, his Twitter handle was @ZaynMalik1D. The change was bound to happen, but his fans are not taking the change all too joyfully. Hashtags such as #zaynmalik1DalwaysInOurHearts and #YouWillAlwaysBeZaynMalik1D are currently trending on Twitter as fans mourn.
The 22-year-old also deleted the link to One Direction’s webpage off of his bio. A picture that appears to be a private message between Zayn and a fan appeared in the midst of the hysteria. The fan asked why he deleted “1D” and Zayn replied saying, “Because 1D is not in my name, it’s in my heart x.”
Malik announced his exit from the band in March after taking a break from the “On The Road Again” tour due to stress. Zayn made his announcement via the band’s Facebook page claiming he wanted to “be a normal 22-year-old.”
“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band,” Malik said in a statement.
“I’d like to apologize to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.”
It seems as though Mr. Malik is still a ways away from having his time “out of the spotlight” as his fans aren’t giving up on him quite yet. However, fans should take the Twitter as his final confirmation that he will not be returning to the band.
